Car manufacturers and their advertising plans have been making waves in the news lately. GM pulling several forms of their advertisements from the market including social media and high-flying Super Bowl spots has led other automakers to reaffirm their positions in the digital marketing age. Auto brand Hyundai is one such car maker that is continuing with zeal the advertising in social media and the Super Bowl as it has greatly benefited from presence in these media formats.
The Marketing Vice President for Hyundai affirms their digital-friendly view, "The Super Bowl is a perfect venue for a brand like Hyundai. We are extremely pleased to be an advertiser on the 2013 Super Bowl. In addition to the fact that this is far and away the best-watched television program in the U.S., the social media opportunities continue to grow every year and we expect even more impact from this aspect of our advertising on the Super Bowl next year."1This contrasts sharply with the sentiment over at GM, put best by GM's Chief Marketing Officer Joel Ewanick. "Social media is a fad."2
Mr. Ewanick's statement comes with a hint of irony to some in the know, who remember the time when he was Hyundai's ad specialist and pushed Hyundai into the Super Bowl advertising ring and leveraged the Super Bowl platform to roll out the job-loss guarantee that grew sales for Hyundai even during the deepest points of the financial crisis.
Of course, some fans might argue that new Hyundai vehicles really sell themselves, but social media can be used to great effect, and the company believes these new digital mediums will lead the way for advertising in the present and the future. Have you had the opportunity to test drive your favorite 2012 Hyundai model?
